Backgrounder for Levante:

Levante is a brand of brass and woodwind instruments and accessories distributed by EMD Music, a Brussels-based European musical instrument distributor. The line is designed in Europe and aimed at student, intermediate, and entry-level professional players, offering an affordable alternative to higher-priced traditional brass and woodwind makers.

The Levante catalog covers most of the standard band and orchestra brass and woodwind families, including trumpets, cornets, flugelhorns, trombones, euphoniums, and tubas, alongside saxophones such as the LV-SB5105 bass saxophone. Models like the LV-TR5205 Bb trumpet, the silver-plated LV-TR6301 professional trumpet, the LV-TB5205 tenor trombone, and the LV-EP5415 euphonium are typical of the range, which spans lacquered student horns up to silver-plated step-up instruments.

Levante instruments are sold internationally through retailers including Musician’s Friend, Guitar Center, Music & Arts, Target, Thomann, Sonovente, and Rose Morris, as well as a network of specialist music shops across the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Austria. The brand is most often discussed in the context of school band programs and budget-conscious players looking for serviceable horns at low price points.

Additional info

I hardly know where to begin. Levante dealers clearly don’t know their baris from their basses. And yes, show up to band class with a bass sax as a beginner. Your band teacher will love you for it. I could go on, but at this point I feel like I’m beating the proverbial dead horse.

On a serious note, given that multiple dealers are selling the Levante bass saxes with completely incorrect, yet identical descriptions, obviously they are getting these descriptions from the supplier. Someone screwed up big time… Or, hear me out… Was having some fun at work when they wrote the descriptions of these horns.

Description provided by Oleg to dealers for Maestro model:

The Oleg Maestro Saxophones are distinguished from any other brand by the revolutionary Optimized Acoustics technology that sets new standards in sound richness, power, presence and projection. The Oleg Maestro Bass Saxophone is a masterpiece of innovation, an instrument whose intonation is unprecedentedly even across the range of the instrument.

Oleg himself has the mixed curse and blessing of perfect pitch, and is a stickler for even intonation, and for a strong pitch definition within the core fundamentals of the note across the range of the horn. He is also focused on the efficiency of preserving the vibration of the reed and the entire horn. His horns, necks, mouthpieces and ligatures operate together as a single whole, and result in an instrument whose resonance and presence is unrivaled in its price range.

Apart from a great presence in the fundamentals of the tone, the overtone series emanates extremely well from this bass saxophone, making it rich and delightful to hear. Its action is smooth and easy, and its design is classic and elegant.

The consistent impression the player gets after testing the Maestro saxophones is a result of Oleg’s unique procedures in manufacturing: a blend of art, technology, craftsmanship, and acoustic science. Performed exclusively by the inventor himself, every saxophone’s neck and body are painstakingly matched note by note through miniscule adjustments in geometry of the neck. Key alignments guarantee precise pitch-resonance placements, producing the best tones throughout all registers.

From Sopranino to Bass, Oleg products Inc. are sure the “Maestro” line of saxophones are your best match for discovering your true sound. This technology, which has for some time benefitted the world’s most accomplished saxophonists, is now at your fingertips. Be amazed at your newly found tonal beauty, power, presence, response and intonation.

Big bottom.

Extra Info

I am completely unclear what the difference between the 1st generation of bass in 2009, and the Maestro model of the late teens was. I simply don’t see it.

The music store I was working for in 2019-23 became an Oleg dealer, and I spoke with their Sales Rep directly to try and find out what made their bass different from any other Jinbao horn. Without giving away trade secrets, what could he tell me that could explain why we should order Oleg bass saxophones over say any other Jinbao horn. I got exactly a lot of stammering; stuttering; and zero answers.

As I said to him then: I can order all kinds of things from Jinbao on a bass and slap my Bassic Sax name on it. That doesn’t make it special, or any more valuable than any other Jinbao-made bass. At its heart, it is still a Chinese-made bass sax with all their inherit weaknesses. (Oleg didn’t like me all that much. I wasn’t a huge fan of all their products. Some were great. Some rather meh.) 😕

More info

Until June 2026, I don’t recall ever hearing of Prestini before. I do not know what’s going on with the company, but they have some pretty serious unchecked errors in the copy, editing, & QA departments.

Both the Prestini USA website, as well as the info sent out to the dealers—if they indeed have a dealer network—is full of errors. One can only presume that whoever did up the USA website screwed up and inserted the picture of the Prestini bass instead of the baritone. Why? Because the description is consistent with a bari. The only thing that is wrong is the photo. I jokingly made a note to myself I should order one and see what I get. But I really don’t need another bari—and you know that’s what I’m going to get.

As for the European versions of the Prestini websites, they were not functioning at the time of writing. Does Prestini still exist in Europe? Do they still sell horns? Time will tell. At present there is no indication that they shuttered operations, but there is no indication that they exist either. Very strange.

The Sakkusu Bass Saxophone represents excellent value for money. Bass saxophones usually cost in excess of £20,000 but we’re offering our new Sakkusu Bass at an unbelievable price, allowing this impressive saxophone to at last finally become an accessible instrument!

The Sakkusu Bass produces a full-bodied, warm and powerful tone.  It can range from a husky whisper through to a full-throttle beastly noise, if required.  Tuning is well centred and it copes better than some inferior basses when playing over the break.  Everything you need to set yourself up on your bass journey, without having to re-mortgage in the house in order to finance it.

SWING Bass Saxophone BAS-201 Bass Saxophone, includes case and accessories
B-flat bass saxophone, lacquered, adjustable floor stand, includes case, instrument weight approx. 8.65 kg, BAS201

DESCRIPTION

With the BAS-201, we are once again introducing a new instrument from our successful SWING series. The BAS-201 is a bass saxophone that, despite its moderate price, leaves nothing to be desired in terms of craftsmanship and playability. See for yourself how impressive this instrument is by trying it out in our wind instrument department.
Our successful SWING series now includes around 60 instruments. This particularly attractive value for money is also achieved because, unlike budget retailers, we unpack, inspect, and prepare every instrument for play. For brass instruments, this includes, for example, checking the valves, joints, tuning slides, and valve slides; for woodwind instruments, it involves adjusting the mechanics, etc., as well as a test play.

Tuning: Bb, low Bb to high F#, high F# key, detachable bow, F key connection, tone holes pre-polished—no “orange peel” texture, mouthpiece, first-class response—comfortable handling, polished keys, great attention to detail, weight: 8.85 kg, including case and mouthpiece
