Intro to the new Jinbao bass saxophone reference guide

In the original Bassic Sax Blog, I had a Series on Asian-made bass saxophones that dated back to 2008. What I did for The New Bassic Sax, is carefully go through the many articles in the Series, pull the names, descriptions, prices—as well as of course photos—and combine them together in two different articles: this one for the short wrap, AKA French style, basses made by Jinbao; and the other for vintage American style horns made by Jinyin.

Because of the number of stencils literally run the alphabet from A to Z, I have broken down this article into 3 pages to prevent you from having to endlessly scroll. Stencils starting with the letters A thru J can be found on page 1. K – S on page 2. T – Z on page 3.

A – J K – S T – Z
Disclaimer:

This is by no means all the names that were stencilled on Jinbao bass saxes. These are just the ones I catalogued over the years. I am sure there a many, many more that slipped past my radar. Music stores often ordered a couple to test the market, and likely never ordered any more once they finally got rid of them.

If you know of a name that should be included here, please send it to me. Please include photos—bell photos with the stencil name are critical—or a link to where I can see it for verification purposes. Thank you!

Note**

It doesn’t give me great confidence that a company that has been selling the same model of horn for so many years, hasn’t bothered to check its own website for errors. Copy & paste text only works so well. This is NOT a low A.

Strong metal, a great neck, and solid keywork make this bass sax easy to play. Patterned in the style of a modern Bass Saxophone. It features a shorter wrap, and smaller bore, with modern style fingering similar to the IW Baritone Saxophone. This gives the instrument a very even feel and even sound! Extra Info

J’Élle Stainer is a South American manufacturer known for its “extreme” low saxophones. I obtained confirmation from the company rep. that these 3 instruments were indeed Jinbao-made bass saxophones, and that they were the only horns that J’Élle Stainer sold that did not originate from their factory originally.

These days no low Bb Jinbao-made stencil horns are listed on the J’Élle Stainer website. Their customized low A version, shown immediately below, is the only Jinbao stencil found there.

Extra Info

This is the only one of J’Élle Stainer’s saxophones that lists it as “manufactured”, instead of “handmade”. That’s a telltale sign that the main pieces themselves originate outside the J’Élle Stainer manufacturing plant. Read: Jinbao.

The fact that they are “assembled in Brazil” would indicate that they come from the Jinbao factory in China in pieces; get customized in Brazil with the low A extension; assembled; and finally sent out to their US or Italian distributors for final setup prior to shipping to customer.
