Database of Stencil Sax Names & Makers

If you are not sure what a stencil sax is, please read this page first.

The following is an updated listing of the extremely comprehensive listing of stencil and second—and in some cases third line, or even student model horns—that was on my old Bassic Sax website. Like the old one, this will eventually be linked/illustrated with photos of the stencils to make it easier to ID yours.

However, until Pete and I decide how we are going to deal with still fully functional Bassic Sax Pix on my old domain, I’m not going to go to create links to things that may eventually go

Vintage & modern Asian-made bass saxophone focus

I have focused on vintage saxophones, with the exception of modern Asian bass saxophone manufacturers Jinyin and Jinbao. Why? Because I specialize in vintage and bass saxophones, and quite simply put, it is nearly impossible to figure out who makes modern stencil horns anyway.

Is it perfect? No. Is it 100% complete? Obviously it can’t be. So please leave me greeting in the Guest Book and let me know what you have. I’ll reach out to you and get some pics from you that way. This will help find more stencil names.

NOTE: Over the years many ordering companies ordered saxophones from multiple manufacturers. This is why you see some stencil names appearing under multiple columns. Furthermore, established saxophone manufacturers were known to order saxophones from each other if they were unable to fulfil an order.

For example, when JK was unable to fulfill a large order of baritone saxophones, they outsourced some of this bari sax production to B&S. This in turn can lead to confusion because of course a Beaugnier-made SML looks so different than one made in the SML factory. Or a JK-made Evette & Schaeffer looks different than one made in the Buffet factory, and so on, and so on, and so on.

How to use this table

There is a horizontal slider below the last name on the list that lets you scroll through all the stencil manufacturer names from A to Y. Please note if you change the default entries per page from 10 upwards, the horizontal bar will appear below the LAST entry of longest column. This might leave a lot of blank space in much of the chart.

There is also a search bar. At present there is no way to highlight the search term. I need to look into doing this. Give me a bit of time. 🙂 

Until I come up with a native highlighting method, there is a work around, but it is a three-step process. 

1. Use the table’s search bar to look for a name. EG: Wolverine
2. Press Ctrl+F (Windows and Linux) or Command+F (Mac). Then just type in the name you’re looking for and search for it by pressing  Enter.
3. Then use the horizontal bar at the bottom on the table to scroll back and forth to find the highlighted item. Then you’ll find Buescher, Conn, King, and York made them.
